第二期家校教育研讨会
The 2nd School-Parent Symposium
9月12日晚上7点，海曙赫威斯学校2019学年第二期家校教育研讨会在新校区报告厅如期召开。
此次研讨会由付老师主持，外教Lee主讲。Lee本学年担任我校外教团队的教务长一职，他将对学校的英语教学进行严格把关，每周定期与外教团队讨论课程内容和安排。他真诚地希望能与全校家长分享我校英语教学的理念及孩子们学习英语的方法，帮助孩子创造更愉快更高效的英语学习氛围。
本次研讨会的最大亮点之一是，我们荣幸地邀请到巴斯图学校校长Shane Foster在研讨会中通过视频与我们连线。相隔千里，跨越时差，为了我们的孩子，为了更好地学习生活，中西双方的育人之心在这一刻凝聚到了一起。

ABOUT US
关于我们
Our English department this year has grown and now has eight members of staff. We are a diverse faculty from North America and Europe. We are all professional teachers with experience working in international or American schools and with English speakers of other languages (ESOL) backgrounds. Many of us are world travelers, have higher education beyond a bachelor’s degree, and possess various skills and experience, including speaking different languages, that all enrich our teaching in the classroom. We are caring educators who love working with students and bringing the best out of them in our learning community.
今年我校的外籍教师团队正逐步发展壮大，现有八名外籍老师，分别来自北美和欧洲，都是具有在国际或美国学校的工作经验以及其他语言（ESOL）背景的专业教师。外教们都有世界旅行者的背景，学历均是大学本科及以上，拥有各项技能和丰富的教学经验，会说英语、西班牙语、中文等多国语言。外教们都是有爱心的教育工作者，热爱教学，喜欢和学生在一起，并将努力在学习环境中最大限度地激发学生的潜能。

OUR VALUES
我们的价值
Throughout the year, we will be focusing on the big values of what makes us human and what can help us GROW as a learning community.
在这一年中，我们将重点培养学生的价值观，以及在学习坏境中成长的必备技能。
Growth mindset. This is believing that our intelligence improves through study and practice. Every challenge or difficult can be seen as an opportunity to grow! If something is hard, use the growth mindset to rethink the problem or situation.
成长型思维：我们智力的成长是通过学习和实践逐步提高的。任何挑战和困难都是孩子成长过程中难得的历练机会！
Responsibility.This means you doing the things you are expected to do and accept the results of your actions. It is your responsibility to learn in school, to be a better person and to finish your homework.
责任感：你们要做自己应该做的事情，并接受行为所带来的结果。在学校学习是你们的职责，你们有责任成为更好的自己，也有义务完成你们的作业。
Openness. This is appreciating and accepting new ideas, values, feelings, language, and culture. The world is a big place, and valuing openness helps you to realize that the world is bigger than you.
开放性：这是对多样的想法、价值观、感受、语言和文化的欣赏与包容。
Wonder. It is curiosity. It is looking at the world and asking questions. It is being amazed at something bigger and more powerful than you. It is imagining the world to be a better place.

OUR GOALS
办学目标
Our main goal is to equip students with the skills they need in order to converse and communicate with native English speakers and others who use the language.
我们的主要目标是为学生提供所需的语言技能，能与以英语为母语国家的人和使用该语言的其他人进行交流。
This goal is two-fold:
1) We want students to achieve challenging standards, develop critical thinking skills, and cultivate a sense of self-motivation for learning that a western-style classroom would demand of them.
2) In order to truly converse fluently, students need to have an idea of what their peers know, what their lives are actually like, and possess a strong sense of cultural literacy.
这个目标有两个方面：
1) 要求学生能够达到教学标准，培养批判性思维和一种自我激励的能力，这也是西方课堂培养学生的要求。
2) 想要做到流利地和同伴交流，学生还需要知道他们的同伴所感兴趣的话题，他们的生活实际上是什么样的，并具有强烈的文化素养。04
COMMUNI
-CATION
家校沟通
We will be communicating to you frequently every Monday to Friday via WeChat on homework and other updates in the classroom. Our weekly messages on WeChat will be in two parts. At the beginning of the week, normally Mondays, we will first let you know the content of our teaching within the week and second, the structure of the assessments at the end of the week, that will normally take place on Fridays. In our daily messages we will include details on homework objectives and assignments and photos of the actual homework for your reference.
我们将在每周一至周五通过微信与家长们沟通家庭作业及主要教学内容。每周一，我们会在微信上发布一条消息，包含两方面内容：一是本周主要教学内容；二是每周小测的题型介绍，小测通常都会安排在周五。
On Mondays, we will also be sending home a weekly newsletter that has the week’s objectives, spelling words, and other useful information for your child’s English learning. Physical copies of the newsletter will be sent home along with copies of it sent on WeChat.
我们每周一还将发送一份每周简报
，其中包含本周的拼写单词、词汇以及其他有用的信息，供您孩子复习巩固。纸质版简报会发给学生们，同时图片版将通过微信发给家长们。

ABOUT BARSTOW SCHOOL
关于巴斯图
We have a special guest on camera who would like to say a few words. Please welcome, President and Head of Barstow School, Mr. Shane Foster, live from Kansas City, Missouri.

This year, we are aiming at having a stronger connection with the Barstow School of Missouri. In the works is a pen pal program, a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) curriculum on par with Barstow, and even video labs where students from both campuses get to share their science experiments and results with each other!
今年，我们的目标是加强与密苏里州巴斯图学校的联系。和巴斯图学校的联系主要是以下项目：笔友项目，STEAM 课程(科学，技术，工程，艺术和数学)课程与巴斯图同步，甚至是视频实验室，赫威斯和巴斯图两个校区的学生可以互相分享他们的科学实验和结果！
We are also planning future summer camp student exchanges between our schools. Our vision is to have Chinese students come to visit the U.S. for the summer where they would live and study abroad with host families the first year. In the following year, we American students would also have the possibility to live abroad in China during the summer. Our planning is still in process, and we will let you know of future developments as they occur within this academic year.

TEXTBOOK 教科书
For our English curriculum, we are using the Pearson Longman Cornerstone textbook series. This series is a proven, standards-based program focused on learning English and achieving academic success at the same time.
我们的英语课程使用的是皮尔森朗文Cornerstone系列教材。这套教材是一个经过验证的、基于标准的课程，教材中的每个单元都有三个故事，每个故事都有各自的词汇、语法和阅读理解。我们计划今年充分利用这些教材和配套练习册，同时我们老师也会使用更多的教学资源来丰富学习过程。
PROGRAMS TO KNOW

RAZ (Reading A-Z): raz-kids.com
This is a GREAT resource to use at home to practice reading. Books are assigned based on each child’s own reading level to allow him or her to go at his/her own individual pace separate from the school textbook. Students can take comprehension quizzes to gauge comprehension level in a game format. They can also submit recordings of themselves reading so that the teacher can listen and provide feedback.
Kids A-Z是一个非常强大的供学生在家学习英语的在线资源，里面包含丰富的英文书籍，都是根据学生的英语水平按等级排列的，学生完成阅读后还可以进行阅读理解小测试，以加深对文章的理解，还可以将阅读的内容进行录音并直接发送给老师，老师会及时地反馈。
Schoology
Schoology is an online grade database that allows you to see real-time grades for your student. Your child’s grades will be updated for English every Friday. You will also receive a copy of your child’s quiz at the end of every week as well.
Schoology是一个网上评分系统，通过schoology家长能实时查看到您孩子的课堂表现.每周五老师们将上传孩子们的分数，同时周五测试的试卷也会让孩子们带回家。
HOMEWORK 作业
Homework will be assigned daily and will be communicated via WeChat. We ask that students do their best to complete their homework. On weekends, we strongly urge the students to use the Kids A-Z platform to further their learning. With our weekly newsletter, we will provide word lists for upcoming spelling assessments. We will also provide personalized audio recordings which your child can listen to and practice pronunciation. For review, we will also provide study guides before major assessments, such as midterms and final exams.
我们每天都会布置家庭作业，并会通过微信告知家长。我们要求学生尽力完成家庭作业，在周末，我们强烈建议学生使用Kids A-Z进一步学习。我们的每周简报包含了本周小测的复习内容，老师们还会录音给学生们去听，去练习。考试复习阶段，我们还将在期中和期末考试前给学生提供复习指南。

一些建议
Notice efforts when your child tries to speak in English. 当您的孩子尝试说英语的时候，请关注他们，他们正在努力学习。
Surround your child with books (both in English and Chinese). 为您的孩子准备中英文书籍。
Even if you don’t know English, have your child teach YOU about what they learned in school. The best practice is teaching. 如果您不懂英语，请您鼓励孩子和您一起学习，让他们以“小老师”的方式与您分享在校学到的知识。巩固知识最好的方式是去教别人。
If you speak English, try not to directly correct ALL mistakes to avoid discouraging their efforts. 如果您懂英语，请尽量不要直接纠正孩子们的错误，以免挫伤他们的积极性。
Audio books with a paired picture book are great learning tools. 带有插图的有声读物是很好的学习工具。
Listening to the “flow” of a language is more effective for acquisition than any repetitive drills. 语言习得最有效的途径就是多听，这比任何重复的练习都有效。
Notice English around you. Even in China, English can be found everywhere. 随时随地去留意身边的英语。即使在中国，英语也随处可见。
Help students to organize their papers and word lists to avoid stress and loss of schoolwork. 帮助学生整理保管好每周的作业和Wordlist，这些都是复习材料。
Take time to regularly sit down and have your child review English with you before weekly assessments. 在每周小测前，督促您的孩子与您一起复习英语。
结语
Our goal is to provide structure and clarity to not only our staff but to you as well. We will have continuous teacher observations throughout the year to help develop our faculty. We will also be reviewing lesson plans and supervise regular department meetings where we discuss student progress and curriculum development.
今年，您可能已经注意到学校英语部门有了一些新的积极变化。我们现在有教务长Lee和副教务长Chrissy一起管理英语团队。我们的目标是不仅为我们的老师提供更清晰的制度化管理，也为家长们服务。我们将全年不断开展教师互相听课，以提高整体教学水平。我们会检查老师们的备课情况，也会定期举行教研活动，讨论学生们的学习情况和课程开发，及根据学生们的学习反馈进行课程调整。
Although we are busy teaching and administering, we are here to be of service to you. If you have any questions or concerns in the English department, please contact me or Chrissy to set up an appointment. We would be happy to help you. For all personal meetings, we kindly request you arrange at least two days in advance to schedule a meeting during our school hours of 8:00-16:30.
